7 Mistakes You’re Making With Your Design Files (and How to Fix Them)

So, you’ve finally decided to stop wearing those mass-produced, soul-crushing corporate tees and actually create something yourself. Respect. But here’s the thing: just because your design looks "fire" on a four-inch backlit iPhone screen doesn't mean it won't look like a pixelated thumbprint when we press it onto a premium classic tee.

We see it every day. Someone uploads a design they spent three hours on, only for it to arrive at our shop looking like it was recovered from a 1998 hard drive. It’s painful for you, and honestly, it’s a bit insulting to our DTF printers.

If you want to move from "mid" to "main character," you need to stop treating your design files like a last-minute homework assignment. Let’s break down the seven ways you’re sabotaging your own swag, and how to fix them before you click "order."


1. The 72 DPI Death Trap

This is the classic. You found a cool image on Pinterest, took a screenshot, and figured, "Yeah, that’ll work."

Wrong. Most web images are 72 DPI (Dots Per Inch). That’s fine for your Instagram feed, but for custom apparel, it’s basically garbage. When we scale that tiny 72 DPI file up to fit the chest of a custom premium hoodie, it turns into a blurry, fuzzy mess.

The Fix: Start your canvas at 300 DPI at the actual size you want it printed. If you want a 10-inch design, make it 10 inches at 300 DPI. Anything less is just a recipe for regret.

2. The "White Box of Shame" (Transparency Issues)

There is nothing quite as tragic as a beautiful logo trapped inside a giant white rectangle because you forgot to remove the background. We call this the White Box of Shame. If your file is a JPEG, it always has a background. It’s the law of the internet.

If you upload a JPEG with a white background onto a black shirt, guess what? You’re getting a giant white block on your chest. It’s not "retro," it just looks like you didn't finish the job.

The Fix: Export your files as PNGs with a transparent background. If you’re using professional gear like Illustrator or Photoshop, make sure that checkerboard pattern is visible behind your art. No background, no box, no shame.

3. The CMYK Identity Crisis

Your screen lives in a world of RGB (Red, Green, Blue), vibrant, glowing, neon light. Our printers live in the real world of CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black), actual ink.

That neon green you’re obsessed with? It doesn't exist in the world of physical ink. If you design in RGB and don't check your colors, your "electric lime" hoodie might show up looking like "sad broccoli."

The Fix: Set your color mode to CMYK (specifically FOGRA39 if you want to be a pro) before you start. It’ll give you a much more realistic preview of what’s actually possible. If it looks dull on your screen in CMYK, that’s because that’s how it’s going to look on the cotton. Reality hurts, but a wash-tested print that actually matches your vision is worth it.

4. "Wait, What Font Was That?"

You found a sick, obscure font for your brand name. You save the file, send it over, and... our system doesn't have it. Suddenly, your edgy streetwear font is replaced by Comic Sans or Arial. Congratulations, you’ve just designed a middle school bake sale flyer.

The Fix: If you’re using vector software (AI, SVG, PDF), you must "Outline" your fonts. In Illustrator, it’s Shift + Ctrl + O. This turns your text into shapes so the printer doesn't need to "read" the font; it just sees the art. If you're using raster (Photoshop/PNG), just make sure you've flattened the text layers into the image.

5. Thinking "Small" Means "Invisible"

We love detail. Our DTF process is insanely precise. But we aren't magicians. If you have lines in your design that are thinner than a strand of hair, they aren't going to stick to the fabric. They’ll either peel off in the first wash or won't even make it onto the shirt in the first place.

The Fix: Keep your minimum line weight to at least 1.5 points (or about 0.02 inches). If it’s too thin to see clearly when you zoom out to 100%, it’s too thin to print. Bold is better. Streetwear is about impact, not microscopic squinting.

6. The "Screenshot of a Screenshot" Special

We get it, you’re busy. But sending us a screenshot of a design you made in a free app, complete with the "low battery" icon and your carrier logo in the corner, is peak "mid" behavior. Every time an image is screenshotted and resent, it loses quality. It’s like a digital game of telephone where everyone ends up ugly.

The Fix: Always go back to the source file. Download the high-res export from whatever app you're using. If the app only lets you save a "low-res" version for free, maybe it’s time to invest in your craft. You’re worth more than a 400px wide thumbnail.

7. The Wrong Format for the Job

Saving everything as a JPEG is the "participation trophy" of graphic design. JPEGs are compressed, they don't support transparency, and they add "artifacts" (fancy word for digital dirt) around your edges.

The Fix: Use the right tool for the job.

  • PNG: Best for most people. High res, transparent.
  • AI / SVG: The gold standard. Perfectly scalable, no pixels, total control.
  • TIFF / PDF: Great for high-end photography-based designs.

But please, for the love of all that is high-quality apparel, leave the JPEGs in 2012.


The "No-Mid" Design Checklist

Before you hit that upload button on our custom apparel builder, run through this list:

  • Is it 300 DPI?
  • Is the background transparent (PNG)?
  • Are the fonts outlined?
  • Did I check the colors in CMYK?
  • Are the lines thick enough to actually exist?

Stop settling for "okay" and start demanding the best from yourself: because we’re already giving you the best from our end. Our prints are wash-tested for over 50 cycles, but they can’t fix a bad file.
